It would be fine to make it mandatory if they didn't spend so much time on
it. If they took one band practice a week out of five to work on the drills
that would be fine. Then make it mandatory. Even the super serious students
appreciate the fun of getting out and doing something different. But
requiring them to be in a marching band whose training is so time consuming
that it is more of a sport makes it unreasonable to make the marching band
mandatory. So it depends upon the program.

It's because they keep changing a very complex show - week after week (why
not just go up, and down the field, and play some nice music??). No doubt
it is hard work, but is it worth it? Lots, and lots of time, and energy
spent that could be doing something that will benefit their musicality. (my
last post on this, don't want to perpetuate it more). One of my top H.S.
students happens to really enjoy her Competition marching band - she even
turned down an opportunity to play in a really great woodwind quintet, get
a $2000 lesson scholarship, and compete in the finals of the Fischoff
Competition - to march!!!! Nothing I could do about it. A real shame.
