I recently made a barrel or two, or three - well actually there are four
now. They seem to breed rather like rabbits.

Anyway two have a "Moennig" type converging bore (dimensions as per J Hite),
one has a parallel bore and the fourth has a converging-parallel-diverging
bore.

The step in the bore, between barrel and upper joint, left by the
converging-only bore didn't make too much sense to me - but when one of my
test drivers (I'm a cellist - can't play the clarinet) tried it out, it was
clear that the lower register sounded better - but that in the upper
register an undertone with a Donald Duckish nasality was introduced.
(Interestingly this was only apparent when my new-to-clarinet-playing nephew
tried it out - when a professional clarinetist played it, the sound was fine
through the full range)

In one of his postings Alvin Swiney mentioned that Master Moennig's last
step in fitting a barrel to a clarinet was to match the outlet of the
barrel to the bore. This made more sense than a step, so I made No 4 with
the C-P-D bore. Much mellower sound - smoother over the full range of the
instrument.

My two cents for what little it's worth.

regards edi
