I wonder if it's just coincidence that in two states where marching bands
appear to be a REALLY a big deal, Texas and Pennsylvania, the dominant
adult musical genres are country-western and the polka, respectively. ;^)

Last year (and year before) a student of mine was the Drum Major of the
Largest Marching Band in PA. (collegiate that is) the IUP Marching Band
(Jack Stamp's group). He is a Marching Band nut - loves it. He got a great
conducting job straight out of his undergrad - conducting an Orchestra (and
he is a Sax player) considered one of the top groups in Phila. (Creative
and Performing Arts H.S.). To think of all of the musicians who played in
Orchestras many, many years to loose the job to a Sax player - who would
rather be directing a marching band. Is there no justice.......?? I must
say that I've never had a student who wanted to play country western music
(here in PA), nor a student who's aspiration was to be a mummer (it's a
Phila. thing for those who wonder what a mummer is ((basically a
sax/stringband of a bunch of grownups strutting around on New Years day in
various outrageous costumes, and makeup). I'm glad for the little things..
