Regarding choosing a barrel, I would suggest you use a tuner when trying
them out. Yes, one needs to use one's ears, but it is also possible,
especially if you are trying out several, to get to the point that you are
hearing what you want to hear. This is especially true if the reason you
are getting a new barrel is to improve your intonation level within a
performing group.
Also, regarding fit on your clarinet - you need for any barrel you buy to
fit your mouthpiece and upper joint properly. If it does not, then, of
course a new barrel is counterproductive.

Just my 2 pence, 2 cents, 2 pesos, 2 centimes, whatever.
