Interesting question! I was never a music major, but used to associate with
many of them as a result of my involvement with symphonic and jazz bands
during my first college career. A trombonist and I used to play duets
together from literature written for clarinet. He usually took the bottom
line, and the resulting sound was very pleasant, if unusual.
If I remember correctly, he transposed by assuming tenor clef and adding two
flats. What really amazed me was his ability to play sixteenth note runs and
arpeggios as well or better than I could, while moving that awkward slide at
warp speed!
We played mostly for fun, but I recall performing together once at a student
recital. I don't recall being "booed" off the stage, so it must have sounded
all right to the audience.
Thanks for your message--I hadn't thought of this in years.
Regards,
Jim
