Patti Smith writes:
"This is terribly sad. When I hear stories like this, I wish we could
simply
outlaw marching band. And not only because I never could march without
looking like an idiot. I am almost glad my oldest daughter, with all the
native talent she has, wants to play basketball and electric bass and simply
bypass the whole band scene altogether. I pray there is some solution in
sight."

Why outlaw marching band? It is a great experience. Then again, I speak
from my own experiences. Some marching programs teach discipline,
practicing habits, and life long lessons in friendship and team work. I
always look forward to fall time when we go sweat out in the hot sun,
learn our many marching shows, and make new friends for a lifetime. The
first game is always the payoff. There is a lot of pride in our band.
but then again, every band program is different, every teacher different,
and students as well.
There's nothing like seeing a marching band march onto the field...I just
hate the football :)
