Well, there's idiocy and idiocy, I guess. When you buy a used
instrument as-is and all the dealer says is "it'll play," your eyes
SHOULD be wide open. I paid $600 for the used Bundy bass. Plays fine.
Then one day I couldn't hit low notes. Not an embouchure failure, just
the instrument wouldn't sound them. I looked down on the floor. Hello:
a big pad with one of those metal backings. Aha.

The idiot's friend: a roll of duct tape. Uh-huh. Tear off a little
strip of the stuff, fold it over on itself, attach it to the pad backing
so it is smaller in surface than the size of the pad, stuff the thing
into the metal pad fitting on the horn. NO problem thereafter: low
notes that rattle the windows. I don't suppose this is a "recommended
procedure," but what the hell, it worked. So I guess, given Lelia's
prices, I just saved myself eighty bucks:-).

I once owned a real old Leica screwmount camera that had light leaks
because the rubber shutter curtain on this old beast had pinprick sized
holes. This created some real interesting special effects that I didn't
necessarily want. The repair person (it was a she who specialized in
Leica repairs) to whom I brought the camera said "Shutter curtains for
these things are hard to find. Worst comes to worst, you can always put
a strip of black electrician's tape on the curtain." <shiver, tremble>
