This remainds me of the Japanese Symphonic Wind Music Competition. Those
who want to win the Competition (especially junior high / high school
students)
practice and rehearse MORE THAN 6 HOURS EVERY DAY DURING THEIR SUMMER
VACATION.
They can have only two or three days for "SUMMER VACATION" as "Obon."
(Japanese
Traditional Vacation)
So, the stage members cannot have any time for traveling or other things
except the Competition. Non-stage members must go to school and do basic
practice (scales, long tones, etc.) all day,(!) and lose the interest for
music,
then quit the club.
The Competition itself may be effective to make the skills of each band
higher, it seems for me that it requires too much.

I only wish the Principal Clarinet of the Tokyo Clarinet Philharmony
practiced that much in a month. (if you were at the ClarFest mass Clarinet
Choir concert you would appreciate the statement ;) Principal Clarinet
sounded soooo bad that it actually got pretty funny.....
