I recall a teacher in college who related the story of a father who wanted
to help and glued the bridge of a violin in place because it had come loose.

One of my favorites: I was teaching beginning band in a long term sub
position after I got out of undergrad school. There was a young trumpet
player who was having trouble getting anything to come out of his horn. As I
was checking the valves out, I noticed they would turn freely in the
casings. I mentioned that I could not get them to lock in. The student
replied " My Dad said there were burrs on them so he filed them off"
