Janis noted:

<<<I have equally horrific stories of bringing my instruments to "qualified"
repair people and many situations where band directors and clarinet teachers
have repaired my instrument and have even improved on my intruments. I
don't think that generalizations can be made either way.>>>

I can make one.

"In general," I don't use repair people that are not at least high-mediocre
performers. IMHO, if you don't know how to play a clarinet, you won't be
able to know if you have adequately fixed one. How would you test it?

I had a professor (Bill McColl = the University of Washington) who did a
great deal of tinkering w/ horns. He taught me how to keep my own horn in
proper regulation--the little adjustments that keep it running just the way
I like it. Every 10 years or so I'll go to a friendly repair tech for new
pads & key swedging--other than that, I'll never see them.
