Dear Richard, Bill and others interested in this thread,

Now, now....let's not get ourselves too heated up. Those of us who teach,
and who buy and sell musical instruments are all coming at the same thing
from different angles - the preservation, continuance and growth of
traditional melodic classical - type music (as opposed to popular idioms
such as rock or top 40, but including jazz, and folk-derived). This task
can be herculean in the face of what passes for popular culture. I humbly
suggest that we direct our discussion more toward how we can develop some
ideas and actions to make our respective jobs easier and get our message
out - the message that music is not just a spectator sport - music making is
a skill that can be learned. Ideas?

Patty Smith
