Personally, I think all band directors (and/or music teachers dealing with
band instruments) should be taught minimal repair skills -- replace a pad,
adjust out a bent or leaking key, etc. Nobody should be allowed to
graduate with a music education degree without a course in emergency
repairs. Many with innate mechanical ability figure it out themselves.
Some without that talent try to do their own repairs, and we have to repair
the damage (broken braces and twisted leadpipes on trumpets, broken keys,
etc.). I must admit, though, DADS are even worse than music teachers!
(Here, gimme that! I ain't payin' good money to get that mouthpiece
unstuck! Where are my Vice-grips?)
