Good point on the sales tax, Bill. Actually, there are people who are
already trying to make this so.
Additionally, GOOD point on my idea there too. Perhaps a buyer could
negotiate some sort of service contract with a local store, paying, say,
$30.00 for a service contract that covered, say, five years. Any small
repairs (i.e., a pad or cork or spring replaced here or there would be free
for that period, and more extensive repairs would be discounted by a certain
percentage. This way, the person doesn't have to be without a horn, or,
worse, lose it in the mail. I like to get to know those in my area, as well
as those further afoot who do repairs. The best situation I was ever in was
when I was stationed in San Diego, and one of my fellow clarinetists had
studied repair in college, and basically had an entire shop at her disposal!
She was pretty good (she practically lived in that shop, and the band had
lots of old instruments that needed to be put into basic playing condition),
and I knew I wouldn't have to send my horn off for some time to come!
