I don't think this number of pro instruments would be available in most
places. We have around 1 million people in the Las Vegas area now. The
Buffet dealer (only one) probably sells 10-12 pro clarinets (R-13s and
Festivals) a year. I think it is unlikely he ever has more than four and
sometimes it is only on or two. I have never seen a professional clarinet
at any of the other dealers. We are probably better off than most.

Subject: [kl] Re: Artist quality instruments from local stores

I think that it is frequently possible to work with
local stores to get a good selection of clarinets.
I've worked closely with the stores here, in an attempt to get them to
do so, and succeeded in getting the Buffet dealer to get a selection of
Buffets in. Since Buffet is the most popular professional clarinet here,
they were willing to do so. I recently tried out clarinets for two
students, and had 14 clarinets to choose from, mostly R13's, but also 3
Festivals and a Greenline. The price was a little higher than mail order
($1950) but we had a nice selection of instruments, and had the action
adjusted to suit us. This is because the clarinet teachers in town
worked with the store to make this happen. Of course, it is not possible
in every town, and we only have a choice on Buffets. Unfortunately,
Leblancs, Selmers, and Yamahas need to be special ordered. When I need
special order items, such as A clarinets, I usually go with Lisa
Argiris' (sp?) International Musical Suppliers, since she can actually
test out clarinets.
