Hi Fred,
Sorry we didn't meet at Ostend. Hope you don't mind my discussing your
post here
instead.

She gave a breathtaking performance of the Rigoletto (the end was too
fast for my
taste tho') but I had the feeling that she did not feel well with her
sound or
that she didn't trust it. The tied notes were often cut a bit short in
the
cadenzas - and like you say, she was hard to hear when the orchestra was
active.
I'd blame that on the orchestra though, even though the other soloists
had no
problem. My favorite was Eddy Vanoosthuyse. One could hear every note
and it was
a musically moving performance.

The piano was tuned too low (for the Americans??), the room was very hot
(makes
clarinet high). (So you have a right to be crabby!) Mr. Deplus kept
pulling out at the barrel, at the middle joint. I
suspect he had his short barrel there, I don't know. But the *music*
came through
despite that. It was wonderful! I still remember a concert a few years
ago where
that happened to me. I had no chance to get down to the pitch of the
piano. I
swore I would refuse to play next time that situation occured. After
reading the
review, I repeated my vow. I could only admire Mr. Deplus for keeping it
up. Did
you notice that his intonation was very constant? To me only the piano
sounded
flat! By the way, what did you think of Freddy Arteel's version of the
Glinka
(with viola)? I loved it!

I was praying for him too! Maybe next time, his daughter (who was
playing first
clarinet in that very orchestra!) will be the soloist for that piece?

Look forward to hearing him in a few years' time. Did you also think he
sounded
better in the big hall (Kursaal) than the small one?

Here's my report on Sabine Meyer and Co. as requested by Nancy:

The Trio di Clarone played more new Divertimenti by Mozart/Schottstaedt
on the
Magic Flute. I asked Wolfgang M. afterwords if the music was published.
He
replied that it will be in a few "minutes". More wonderful basset horn
trios to
look forward to!

After that Wolfgang and Sabine played the Poulenc duo. Sabine played the
A clar.
Elegant and solid. Again, some of the runs (especially at the end of the
last
mvt) were unclear because of being too fast.

On the way off stage, Sabine handed her A clar. to Wolfgang who then
used it for
the Stravinsky. I was surprised how girlish Sabine Mayer seems. Guido
announced
that they were sharing the piece but *how* was a secret. She sat there
on stage
while her brother played the first two movments of the Stravinsky 3 pcs
smiling
to herself and enjoying how they were going to surprise the audience.

Rainer Wehle (Sabine's husband, first clar. in Radio Symph.Orch of the
NDR,
Hanover) played the solo mvt. of the 4tet for the end of time by
Messiaen. Very
solid playing but lacking a bit in dynamic contrast - esp. that long
Gb...

The last piece consisted of several mvts. from the Mozart bassethorn
Divertimento
from Don Giovanni. Wonderful.
