A few years back I was a consultant for DEC, doing a lot of work on the Alpha/AXPs when they first came out. I was doing some work at Ford of England on the Ford CAD systems, and told them they should buy another bunch of machines since they were so cheap & fast.

They looked at me like I was a crazy man. With duty, taxes, and something DEC euphmisticallt called a "country uplift", the machines were well nigh triple the price they were in the US ...

It was just about the same out in Germany, too.
