Hi Folks: As long as clarinetists buy clarinets, the order of consumer
satisfaction will range from the naive to the sophisticated buyer. The
discussion on local vs mailorder buying is really quite moot since the
marketplace of nearly everything is frought with caveats. We buy an
R13 clarinet from a mailorder supplier and generally accept what they
send. Yet, if one would travel to the supplier's location, try and
carefully inspect 10 to 15 clarinets,we may be saddened to see gross
differences and the awesome R13 might not be the epitome of clarinetdom
after all. With all the acoustical fuss made over alleged precision of
tapered bores I've seen ream marks, out of rounds, and non concentric
bores, cuttings left in the horn and a host of annoying features which
don't bode well for the buyer getting a single randomly selected instru-
ment. That is not to say most are not generally good. They are. But
Buffet and mail order shippers put their pants on one leg at a time just
like every one else in a competitive business. If I sound skeptical,
its because I am. I want choices.
regards, Don, <nw2v=localnet>
