Jeff,
Here are the program notes I used on one of my DMA recitals.

The Italian clarinetist Luigi Bassi was the solo clarinetist in
the La Scala Opera House orchestra for many years. Legendary conductor
Hans von Blow called him a valentissimo artista. It was his sound which
Verdi had in his ear when he wrote the immortal solo in the third act of
La Forza del Destino. Bassi was also a fine composer in Verdis style,
with all of his surviving output being composed for the clarinet. These
include short nocturnes and at least two other opera paraphrases; on "Il
Trovatore" and "I Puritani".

In addition, there is a nice little biography on Bassi in Pamela
Weston's wonderful book "Great Clarinetists of the Past", which should be
part of EVERY serious clarinetist's library, no matter how poor they
say they are.
