Ian, you pay and you pay and you never stop paying.

The prices mentioned don't deal with things like (expert) regulation of
keys. Also, changing to cork pads in the upper of an E-11 is every bit as
worthwhile as for an R-13 or other instrument.

The world over, one thing rings true, you pay for what you get. If you go
catalogue, expect to spend some money with you local repair person to get
the clarinet right. Spend more for that local supplier, and expect to get
some of the former services thrown into the deal.

I saw a Buffet B-12 selling for $1095 in a local store last year. I inquired
as to whether that was the list price or an "everyday" price (or thinking to
myself, "is it a joke?"). The salesman said that was his price and he was
"selling 'em like hotcakes". Go figure ...

The answer is that the spectrum is wide in pricing and generally you'll find
something for every pocketbook. Just keep saying to yourself "Its only
money!"
