It doesn't have to be a small college town and it doesn't even have to
be a big city with Nimet. The college stations in New York City are
every bit as prone to gaffes.

Some years ago, WKCR, Columbia University's (very fine) FM station,
fired their Saturday night opera guy, one Stefan Zucker. This was a
mixed blessing. Zucker was amazingly knowledgable and got incredible
guests to come on his show--everyone from Jerome Hines, Franco Corelli,
and Elaine Malbin--to NYC's No. 1 opera fan, Rudolf Giuliani. However,
Zucker was also a sexist and homophobic pig with a fantastically
inflated opinion of himself.

But he pronounced the words right.

He was replaced by a bunch of college students who ranged from laughable
to ludicrous. This must've been like having the high school gym teacher
take over the English class on the theory that we all speak English,
anyway, so anyone can teach it. "Hey, he does a Metal rock show, give
him the opera gig this week." Well, it may be all rock 'n' roll to me,
except for the names. Or the fact that a lot of them had to read the
story out of the booklet in the CD, mispronouncing and messing up
character names ("Louise Miller--that's sung by Anna Mo'fo--is the
daughter of old Miller who doesn't seem have a first name I can find in
here, but Cornell MickKneel sure sounds good as the old guy, and Carlos
Berjhonzi is a way cool tenor").
