About 4 years ago, Barenboim and the CSO performed Bruckner's 8th here in Boston. It's the only classical concert I've ever been to where I can physically feel the sound on my face. Anyways, the crowd went insane after the last chord. Barenboim was visibly shocked. It took him a few minutes to bow. The applause lasted at least 20 minutes. No encore and understandably so. Anything after that performance of Bruckner's 8th would have been wholly anti-climactic.
