After my last posting, I remembered a funny incident that occurred
with the Long Beach Symphony many years ago. Hans Beer was directing,
and we were playing the Weber/Berlioz "Invitation to the Dance".
Everything went fine until the last clarinet/cello duet. The forte
crescendo just prior apparently stirred the audience so much that they
began to applaud wildly. Hans looked at the cellist and I, and decided
not to play the ending as written.

We opened the next concert a couple of weeks later with that very
same ending. Beer explained very matter of factly that this was "just
something left over from the last concert".
