> In 1997 when the Vienna Philharmonic played in Orange County, California, the audience shocked the European musicians by applauding after each movement.

I live in Orange County, and find the incessant clapping annoying. To
those of you who don't know the the Southern California area, we are
somewhat of a "cultural wasteland". The situation is improving, with a
well established opera company in LA (no ballet, though), and a
respectable Pacific Symphony here in OC. But the audiences here show
little cultural graces at concerts: excessive applause, constant
talking, candy wrappers, arriving late, usw. Many are the times I've
had to sush a well heeled "Patron of the Arts" sitting behind me. Maybe
I'm a little to old-world .........
As far as Berenboim's podium antics, they have always left me
cold.... and often annoyed. Once many years ago with the LA Phil.....
well, I won't go into that.
