When we lost our concert hall due to a collapsed ceiling, we moved into
the local basketball arena until our new place was built
(a period of several years.) We lost some of our "sophisticated"
audience who refused to be seen in such a place, and gained a new
following, who applauded after every movement. I was excited, because
this meant that we were introducing orchestral music to people who were
unfamiliar with it. This is something we should strive for, not dread.
In time, they stopped applauding between movements, and many of them
became devoted listeners. Now that we have a real concert hall again, we
have our new audience and our original audience combined. As a result,
we sold out our entire season in about 48 hours, and had to add a second
mini-season, which will also probably sell out before the season starts.
(The hall seats about 2,000.) As musicians, what could be more beautiful
than introducing new people to our type of music, whatever that may be?
I'm against snob appeal, and in favor of people enjoying what they hear,
even if they don't know the "proper" way to enjoy it.
