I don't know the history behind the Mahler, but I disagree with the
Wagner comment. The fact it was Wagner's last work is not relevant:
people do not refrain from applause at Puccini's Turandot or Verdi's
Falstaff. Parsifal forever has been passed off by its Wagnerite
adherents as a "Christian Drama." Not to get again into THAT topic
regarding Wagner (you all know the one I mean, I think), calling
anything Wagner wrote "Christian" is like saying Die Meistersinger is a
lesson in how to cobble shoes or prepare for a musical competition.
