Subj: [kl] TPIN e-list is virus infected
Date: Thu, 8 Jul 1999 11:03:20 -0400

Sorry to bother the list with this topic, but since I notice that several
people post both to this list and to the TPIN trumpet list, perhaps it's
worth mentioning that the most recent TPIN Digest, #377, consists of nothing
but the virus Happy99.exe, apparently in executable form. I'm glad the
"WOBBLER Virus" turned out to be nothing but the latest hoax, but Happy99 is
real and I'm not reporting a rumor: I just received (and deleted without
opening) that infected Digest. Although TPIN in theory is text-only, the
TPIN software evidently is vulnerable to this type of virus and allows an
attached file to, well, attach itself, in something other than .txt format.

This is the second time in about a week that Happy99.exe has come through the
TPIN digest. Both times, I nearly fouled up and downloaded "on auto-pilot"
before noticing what that file really was, since I *expect* the trumpet
Digest to include an attached file. I wouldn't be surprised if some
subscribers to that Digest got caught, as I almost did, and will unknowingly
spread the bug around as they did last week (it spreads by sending itself out
as an e-mail, with the virus as an attachment, to the last x number of people
the infected computer e-mailed); so if you also subscribe to TPIN, or
correspond with brass players, be alert and avoid the bug by deleting the
attachment without opening it.

Lelia
