Tony Pay noted of the stolen boxwood clarinets:

<<<The story goes that the wood was owned by Buffet-Crampon, who sold it off
because they had no use for it.>>>

This is depressing, if true, because there certainly IS a use for it . . .
clarinets. A teacher of mine (William McColl = the University of
Washington) has had a couple of sets of modern Buffet clarinets made for him
out of boxwood. While a direct violation of at least one of the ten
commandments, I covet them mightily. Aside from looking really, really
cool, they weigh much less than the mpingo/grenadilla that is normally used.
Much less pressure on the right thumb, increasing the joy factor quite a
bit.

Now I am sure that some will argue that the lighter wood gives a less
focused sound yada yada yada. It doesn't. They sounded exactly the same in
the blind tests we actually conducted at the master class--changing the reed
(from one Vandoren 3-1/2 to another) made more of a difference.
