The Grafton plastic Alto Saxophones I have seen are wonderful
instruments, the two I own play magnificently. The intent was that your
Grafton alto Saxophone's body could, if broken, be replaced with
another, transferring the original keys over. The Grafton was made by
John Houston in England, his plans to do sopranos and tenors never came
to fruition. Grafton altos are not hot, but rather warm, collectors
items, and are very playable.

The Saxophone has thin metal walls and the clarinet, thick wooden, so
makers who imitate these conventions end up with indestructable Bundy
clarinets: almost an inch across, with a tiny bore; and more fragile
Grafton alto Saxophones: 4 inches across with the plastic only a sixteen
inch thick on each side.

I have one Grafton for sale, by the way, if anyone wants to be the next
Ornette Coleman. They are extremely suitable for legit use, having a
wonderful mellow tone; and are the ultimate "camp" instrument, evoking
the '50s in an instant.
