Possibly - but probably not. Easiest way to check is to disconnect it..

It is most probably caused by hard disk access during playback or recording.
Ensure you've plenty of memory (256 Mb and more is common for
recording/editing - 256 Mb of 100 Mhz DIMM SRAM costs barely over $200 these
days, and with a typical program you can edit somewhere around 10 minutes
worth of 44KHz Stereo 16 bit sound without disk accesses) and if you're
using Win95/98 make sure you tell Windows your a server machine to get more
memory allocated for disk buffering
(Control-panel->System->Performance->File System->Typical Role = Network
Server and Read Ahead Optimization Full)
