Johan
The Indiana was Martins student line. It is still an excellent sax. There
does not seem to be the difference between it and Martins upper line that
there were for othere manufacturers of the same period.
It still uses the heavy soldered beveled tone holes that the Martin
intermediate and pro horns do.
Martin first started manufacturing the Indianas in the early 1950s.

The Martin Line consisted of

Indiana - student
Imperial - intermediate
Handcraft, Committee, Magna - pro horns. (some of these just say The
Martin).

The Martins are known for their dark sound.
I personally play a Martin Handcraft Alto from the mid 30s.
It has a very clear sound which I really like(also very similar to the one
or two Indianas I have played). Most current saxes have a brighter sound,
with a lighter more resonant metal.

With saxophones unlike clarinets, there does not seem to be such a single
defined sound people search for. I think this is due to saxes being used
more for Jazz where a more individualistic sound is desired.

PS
Martin also manufactured saxophones (stencils) for a number of other
companies (Lyon and Healy, Wurlitzer etc.) You can always identify a Martin
by its tone holes, No other saxophone I know of manufactured saxophones with
the same type of soldered beveled tone holes.
