Hi Leila,
I'm enormously envious that you own a bass sax, and what a great idea it is
to transpose operatic bass parts- but have you ever heard the recordings by
Adrian Rollini who must surely be THE GREATIST bass sax soloist of all time.
Rollini stopped recording as a bass saxist sometime in the late 30's as far
as I know (after that he went to UK & arranged & led orchs & played other
instruments including xylophone!) but I don't think he's ever been equalled
for technical virtuosity & imagination as a bass instrument virtuoso.
Most(if not all) his really great recordings on bass sax were made with white
"hot dance" combos, notably those led by or including Bix Beiderbecke
(derogatorarily known as "Bixieland") - listen to "Bix & his gang - early/mid
1920s" reissues on Columbia/CBS. If you can find these I hope you find them
as inspiring as I do; if not, send me an e-mail & I'll send you a tape.
Regards,
Tim Shaw
