I get that kind of charge out of my bass sax, only a sixth lower! The only
problem with it is that I have to memorize the lowest passages, because the
old monster vibrates so much that it makes my eyeballs jiggle to the point
where I can't always read the score. I still want a bass clarinet, though.
I think they're gorgeous-sounding instruments even though they don't have the
ferocity of a big sax. One advantage to being an irresponsible amateur is
that you can forget about the boring "oompah, oompah, blat blat blat" music
written to anchor the sound of a band or orchestra. Instead, I transpose
Mozart bass arias and other music with a melody for my bass sax, and would do
the same for bass clarinet.
