As an example:

I just received permission from Warner Bros. to photocopy extra parts for
a band piece I am programming this next fall. I wrote to Hal Leonard, the
copyright holder of the work, originally published by a now-defunct
company, and they faxed me to refer me to WB. We actually own a copy of
the band work, but the parts are old and brittle, and I wanted to make a
full score. Therefore, my request was to: a) copy parts as needed from
our original set; and b) use the parts to make a full score (transposed)
for use with rehearsals. WB complied but asked for a $40 fee and the
granted permission to make one set of parts, one score, and required that
I not copy for profit or otherwise the score for anyone else. I also have
to print on each photocopy a statement provided by WB for permission.

The bottom line? It will be expensive, but it is the publishing company's
right to make these kinds of requests and our job to pay them their due.
