The embouchure could also be too loose! If you're trying to get a breathy,
soft sound known as a sub-tone, a loose, open embouchure is required,
but..if your trying for a classic saxophone sound, a firm embouchure is
required. You may not have enough mouthpiece in your mouth. You may have
leaks in the instrument....Just the slightest leak anywhere on the
instrument will cause that problem. Your reed may be chipped, cracked, or
out of balance, (not to mention the wrong strength for the mouthpiece). Any
chip in the facing of the mouthpiece, (no matter how small), will cause that
problem. If your mouthpiece has a high baffle, you'll have trouble with
those notes. Breath support and control is another issue. For Classic
sound, the embouchure is bassically the same throughout the range of the
instrument. For Jazz sound, anything that works, anything you like, goes.
It may not hurt to get a few lessons......the switch is not as easy as you
might think.

lesson, I don't know too much. I have, however, had more paying gigs on
sax, and that will probably continue. The only signifigant problem I've had
on sax has been getting the lower register to sound. I can hit the low D
consistently, but no lower. Can any self-taught (or even professional!) sax
players give me a hand?
I play alto if it makes a difference.

One of these might be the problem: you could have a worn out reed, you might
not be using enough air support, or your embochure might be too tight.
