More prefferable in normal use, yes, but using the plateau keys in the
second register can come in _very_ handy for grace notes, trills, etc.
Also - the tone of these "long" notes on sax are not necessarily "bad" -
just different. A player with a good ear and good control over tone and
intonation in general (using voicing) can use these fingerings to great
advantage.

BTW, Jack, between G#'' and A'' (on sax) is where the register key
mechanism switches from the lower vent to the upper (neck) vent - so
this might be considered the second "break" on sax. And beginning with
the front fingerings for E''' and F''', yet another "break" may be
considered. It takes considerable effort (at first) to make these two
notes sound with the same tonality (color) as their palm key equivalents.
But I'd venture to say that saxophonists (especially those that do a lot
of work in the altissimo) use a much wider range of harmonics than do
clarinetists. Is this due primarily to the sax's conical shape (as
opposed to the cylindrical shape of the clarinet)? Anybody?
