And then you can take lessons from the buglers about acquiring the obligatory
drawer full of mouthpieces and the other obligatory drawer full of mutes.
Mutes, it seems, come in infinite variety with endless subtleties. In fact,
a trumpet list member mentioned just this week (not sure if he was bragging
or complaining...) that he owns 12 mutes. Mutes have corks where they fit
into the bell. To lubricate or not to lubricate? To shave down the corks or
not to shave them down, and if so, how much, and with what grade of sandpaper?
