Michael Cogswell whimpered:

<<<It's bad enough worrying about my clarinet getting blown out, now I have
to worry about my mouthpiece facing wearing out.

I think I'll buy a bugle. A nice durable mouthpiece and no moving parts.>>>

Hard rubber mouthpieces don't "wear out" per se, although I have seen some
with tooth channels way too deep to be comfortable. It is an unfortunate
fact, however, that blanks do warp over time, changing the facing from the
good one you bought to one that has less than desirable characteristics.

Some blanks are worse than others. Between 15 and 20 years ago, I bought a
number of Dan Johnston mouthpieces that lasted only a year or two (note to
world--his later blanks are much, much better; my Eb has been terrific for
about 8 years now). Because of that, I had him reface a Vandoren crystal
that I used for about 10 years. Of course, that facing deteriorated as
well--literally in one fell swoop.

The Woodwind "steel ebonite" mouthpieces, OTOH, will probably make
archeologists in the millennium after next puzzled.

I'm hoping that the Zinner blanks I play on now will last a good long time.
