I have 2 sax students right now at Interlochen doing the jazz program
(they only take a handful of saxes). I'm sure that they are learning more
about jazz from the teacher there then I could ever teach them - that's a
good thing.

An aside, for those teachers who have students or know of students who'd
like to study jazz: Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp has a _very_ good jazz program
taught by some recognized jazz artists and is considerably less money that
Interlochen (it's a 2 week program, though, not 4 or 8 week). I've listened
to the student jazz bands over there for a few years, and all of them ended
up pretty good. My middle son attended the jazz classes last year, loved
them, and will be going back again this year (he plays piano and (ack!
gag!) trumpet :^)

Yup, great camp - One of my students - Jen Moren was the Sax teacher at
Blue Lake from 1989-91. Around here, there is the Fame Festival, where the
Marsalis's teach (Delfeayo, and Ellis, sometimes a guest spot from
Branford). I had chosen Interlochen because they wanted a longer festival,
and had the money to easily afford it (don't we all wish we could say that;).
