I have a slightly off-the-wall suggestion for students out there -- a "must
read" is Jay Light's outstanding book, "Essays for Oboists."

I do not believe that we have anything comparable in the clarinet
literature. Sure, we have the Stubbins book (dry, dry, dry) and Pamela
Weston's biographies, but nothing I have read is comparable to this book.
While oboe-centered, it provides great insights for all wind players as to
performance tips, practice methods and how not to screw up the gig. I've
picked up a few useful techniques from it, too (for example, "spanking" to
assist in ppp attacks and the "Philadelphia Orchestra" way to count out
measures with the use of fingers).

Oh, and it's quite funny. You wouldn't think a book on oboe playing would
be a can't-put-it-down example, but it is.
