Yes I have seen many register key mechanisms on basses and altos, but
this rod mechanism is quite odd and unlike any of the others I have
seen. I will try and post a photograph of the bass on the Internet
since it is clear people are not quite clear on what I am talking about,
a picture is worth a thousand words.

As for the register key mechanism, are there any professional sopranos
out there which use a single function vent to replace the dual? I have
read about the Omega mechanism and Mazzeo system and their drawbacks,
what happened to the S.K. to bring it out of favor, and why are single
function vents so much more common on lower clarinets? The only thing I
can think of that prevents such mechanisms (maybe not the S.K. in
particular) from being used more often is that production lines for most
french manufacturers would have to be destroyed and rebuilt to add it
in. Maybe that's why you see these things more common on custom made
German clarinets???

And if someone knows something about the questions in my original post
I'd be grateful to hear from them.

Thank you very much,
Mark A. Bradley
