Kevin,
What the repairman did was to shorten the tube. I have a student
now with a Buffet A which was really a dog. I had her take it to my
favorite repairman and convinced him (he was a little leery of doing it
since he had never done it before) to take about 3mm off of it. Then he
re-bored the tube to give it back its symmetrical hourglass interior
shape. And VOILA! The insrument suddenly plays MUCH less stuffy and
much more in tune. I GUARANTEE BUFFET WILL DENY THIS CONDITION EXISTS
(like Vandoren denies its lack of consistency) but I am convinced it does
and have had three clarinets fixed, now.
