Just find another professional bass clarinet to look at and you will see
how the dual speaker key works (it is similar to a saxophone). As you
probably know, the location of the speaker key is a compromise. On many
soprano clarinets the long (clarion B) is not a great note because the key
isn't in the optimum location.

On professional bass clarinets there are usually two alternate openings
with the lower one used for the long B through C#. It is usually
connected to the throat Bb also and improves the sound of that note.

The drawback is that there are more things to go out of adjustment.
