Remember all those endless debates on this list over the years about why
clarinets or other woodwinds crack? Is it temperate differences
inside-outside, or is it a moisture gradient through the bore, or a
combination of both? Or is the major factor a weakness in the wood, not
detected at the factory?
I don't want to start up another debate, but I reckon that some clever
students could setup a school research project to try to identify conditions
of treatment that would cause a hollow hardwood tube to crack with some
degree of reliability. For example, they could pass warm wet air through the
centre and very cold air over the outside - there are lots of possibilities.
Maybe it's been done before but maybe not...
Let me propose two things...
(a) Cindy, with her background as a scientist, designs some experiments that
haven't been already done.
(b) Anna does a survey around her orchestra to find out if any instrument
problems arise that COULD be environment-related during the tour, then
reports back to the list.
(Perhaps I had better try to find a cheap plastic oboe for my daughter)
Cheers,
