My experience is that one is easily deceived by the "sound" of a clarinet.
If it feels good and looks fine you might have the impression that it sounds
better too. The best thing that works for me is taping myself and listening
to it afterwards. Dan is right that most of the sound comes from your body
and your mouthpiece. There are slight differences between clarinets, but you
can sound basically the same on every good instrument. Of course, this is
only my non-professional opinion.

P.S. I know that I am contradicting myself a bit, because in an earlier post
I said that I heard quite a difference between a Buffet RC and a Yamaha CS.
However, in this case it also comes down to details. I mostly sound like
Johan Thole.
