When it comes to certain repertoire, I don't think it's as big of an issue. I think it wouldn't hurt some Italian opera too much. As for the example given, Salome, that must sound horrible! This is a dangerous precedent. Only in America. There are fledgling companies in less fortunate countries that wouldn't even dare do such a thing.
