For what its worth, I never clip a reed any more. If I need to make it more
resistant, I use a long strip of 320 sandpaper and draw it from the sides to
the center, turning the reed over to do both sides. (Never draw the sandpaper
across the center to the sides as this will tend to tear the fibers).

This also allows me to get a better shape to the tip of a reed than that
which is formed by a reed clipper.

I usually find that if a reed is no resistant enough, however, no matter what
I do to it I will never really be happy with it.

To me it's always better to have the reed offer too much resistance, than too
little. Of course, every couple of years that "perfect reed" comes along.
Usually about three weeks after that important recital...................
