Hello Ken - All cellists start in the bass clef and soon find themselves
facing tenor and treble clefs. It's no big deal. Once you have identified
a common note on the two clefs you'll discover that your "finger-mind"
connection "reads" the interval from the note you are reading to the next
note and "Voila!" the music is there. Jokingly I once explained it as a
direct opto-digital connection that by-passes the brain.

I've come back to music after many years and have been pulling out all my
old music and more than once I've caught myself missing a change of clef and
playing a fifth out of position. The music sounded fine - only the pitch
was different.

I think that we all start playing so early that we forget how we struggled
to learn - and later we seem unable to sit down and work at reading new
music one bar at a time, putting bars together to play a phrase...

Get a CD of the Bach unaccompanieds and accompany the cellist - then go and
find a real live cellist - he'll be overjoyed to find a reason to play them.
