With reference to bores gradually becoming larger as a result of
saliva,time, swabbing, etc. and contributing to "blow-out". If this
occurs, and many seem to feel that it is common in the upper joint and
barrel and have had their upper joints "sleeved " and re-bored or
replaced their barrels, might I offer another possible course of action.

Could these now larger bore sections be returned to usefulness by
applying a coat or two of clear nail polish to the interior, much the
same as it is used to decrease diameter of tone holes as is sometimes
required?

The nail polish would leave a very smooth and glossy interior-repairing
the damage usually evidenced with wear(a feathery or roughened
interior).
The thin layer of each coat would allow for a gradual build to the
proper diamensions. IF the material is not of consequence to tone
production(apply flame resistant here), then a coat of nail polish and a
smooth interior would be an improvement over a roughened bore that was
too large.

Have any on the list experimented? I've inserted tape to reduce bore and
achieved the lowering of pitch and slight darkening ( apply more flame
retardant) of tone as expected. These were only preliminary temporary
investigations. Would any who have repair experience on older horns care
to comment? Alvin?
