Well, he was a major player in the Philadelphia theater pit orchestras. In
those days (a little before my time) there were actually live orchestras
even in the pits of some movie houses, and there was a great deal more live
theater in a city like Philadelphia than there is today. After all, Eugene
Ormandy, before he became a conductor, was a theater violinist in New York.

part-time symphonic outlet for players who did other things for a living.
