I think the patch has no more ill effect on the sound than double-lip has.
It probably does limit some bone conduction _if_ the pad is thick enough,
but so does the upper lip padding the upper teeth in a double-lip
embouchure. FWIW, I've played with patches of various thicknesses since my
teen years as a student. For some reason my upper front teeth vibrate quite
painfully, especially in the chalumeau register (kind of like the old
slow-speed drills the dentists use only rarely now) when I put them directly
on the mouthpiece, so for me it's either double-lip or a pad. As for
possibly overcompensating in adjusting the sound of a padded mouthpiece to
our mental sound concept, I think the sound we hear with the pad probably
more accurately reflects what others hear than the sound we hear through
bone conduction. Thus, it may be just as likely that players whose teeth
rest directly on the mouthpiece are adjusting to produce a "duller" sound to
compensate for the extra "brightness" they hear.
